A rare blue moon will light up the night sky this Halloween

While 2020 has forced many of us to cancel any summer holiday and travel plans we might have been concocting due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, lots of people are finding new and inventive ways to keep themselves entertained at home.

Now, personally speaking, I've tried to bake countless sourdough loaves (with very little success, I might add), I've consumed vast quantities of banana bread and completed many zoom quizzes (again with regrettably few successes to speak of).

It is, therefore, time for a new hobby to make itself known to help while away the hours.

Take a look at this stunning teeny-tiny Hunter's Moon:

Of course, all hobbies and past times need to allow for social distancing measures at the moment, so how about something a little different: stargazing.

Already this year, we've been treated to some spectacular lunar events, such as the Full Worm Moon back in March and the Pink Supermoon that lit up the night sky in April.

Yet fear not, because the spectacular moon sightings are not at an end. As reported by House Beautiful, a blue moon will light up the night sky on October 31. Yes, the rare phenomenon is set to occur on Halloween this year. Perfect timing.

Per House Beautiful, the 'blue moon' moniker is potentially misleading - the moon will not be colored blue during the event. Rather, the name is a reference to when the event takes place. Full moons typically occur once a month, though when 13 full moons take place in a year rather than 12, this means we've got a blue moon on our hands (hence the phrase 'once in a blue moon').

According to Earth Sky, there are two types of blue moon. The first is when two full moons occur within the space of one calendar month, while the second is characterized by being the third of four full moons in a single season.

The blue moon this year will be a monthly blue moon, it's reported. There will be a full moon on both October 1 and October 31.
