Missing woman, 42, 'locked in room' for 27 years found 'days from death' after police tip off

A chilling case of long-term abuse has emerged from Poland, where a 42-year-old woman named Mirrella was found in critical condition.

She had allegedly been kept locked in a room by her parents for 27 years.

The woman, who was last seen in public in 1998 when she was just 15 years old, was discovered by authorities in July after neighbors reported a disturbance in her apartment building, as reported by The Mirror.

The Startling Discovery of Mirrella

Police were called to the apartment complex in Świętochłowice, a city in southern Poland, after neighbors heard unsettling noises.

Upon speaking to the 82-year-old landlady, who denied any altercation, officers approached Mirrella.

While she initially assured them that everything was fine, her physical condition raised immediate concerns. Police quickly noticed injuries on her legs, prompting them to call for an ambulance.

Once taken to the hospital, doctors determined that Mirrella was "only days away from death" due to a severe infection. Her critical state has led to a wave of public support, with locals organizing a fundraiser to assist with her recovery and medical costs.

Life Behind Closed Doors

The heart-wrenching details of Mirrella's life in captivity have begun to surface, revealing the profound impact of her isolation.

According to one of the fundraiser organizers, people who knew Mirrella believed she had left her family home nearly 30 years ago. However, the truth was far darker. The woman had not experienced the world beyond her four walls for almost three decades.

The fundraiser post describes Mirrella's life in captivity: "She has never even seen her city develop, that it is behind in everything, that she has missed out on so many things, she has never been to a doctor, never obtained an ID card, never gone for a simple walk or even to the balcony."

Mirrella's isolation was so extreme that she had never been to a dentist or a hairdresser. Her teeth and hair were in a dire condition, with both threatening her long-term health. As a result, visits to private medical clinics are now urgently necessary to address her deteriorating condition.

Brazilian Girl Found in Similar State

Mirrella's case is not an isolated incident.

Just months before her rescue, Brazilian authorities uncovered another tragic case of neglect in which a six-year-old girl had been kept locked away in a room for her entire life, per the Daily Mail.

This young child, found in a state of extreme neglect, was discovered by Brazilian police after an anonymous tip-off in September.

The child, found in the city of Sorocaba in São Paulo state, was living in appalling conditions. She had been locked away in a dark, filthy room, with only a teddy bear for company.

Authorities discovered that the child had been fed a liquid-only diet and had never been to school or taught to speak. As a result, she communicated with police officers and child protection counselors through basic sounds.

Child protection counselor Ligia Guerra described the girl's condition, noting: "The girl was very apathetic and dazzled by everything." Her hair was described as "tangled" and looked "as if it had never been washed."

Further medical examinations revealed that the child was suffering from severe malnutrition, a blood infection, a urinary tract infection, and had not received her infant vaccinations. She was immediately taken to the hospital for a medical assessment and later placed in a children's home.
