Commercial Air India plane carrying 190 passengers crashes upon landing
An Air India Express commericial plane carrying nearly 200 people on board has crashed at an airport in the southern state of Kerala, the BBC has reported.
The aircraft, en route from Dubai, reportedly overshot the runway at Calicut airport upon landing.
Air India has confirmed that there were 184 passengers, including 10 children, and six crew members, including two pilots, onboard flight IX-1344 when it crashed.
The incident occurred at around 19:00 local time (14:30 BTS) and comes as the area has seen substantial flooding amid India's monsoon season.
Images and videos currently being circulated on social media (below) appear to show an aircraft broken in two pieces. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has said that the plane fell into a valley and broke in two after skidding off the end of the runway.

Taking to social media, former Minister of State for Tourism KJ Alphons said in a tweet that many passengers have suffered injuries and the pilot has died. The tweet read:
"Second tragedy of the day in Kerala: Air India Express skids off the runway at Kozhikode, front portion splits, the pilot dies and lots of passengers injured."
"All passengers evacuated. Very lucky the aircraft didn't catch fire."
It is not yet clear how many fatalities there have been in total, but BBC News reports that they have been informed of two deaths.
Today's tragic incident shadows another crash involving an Air India Express flight in 2010, in which 158 people died when the plane overshot the runway at Mangalore airport.
