Donald Trump has sent his condolences to the "NYPD officer who made the ultimate sacrifice" at the deadly New York City office tower shooting.
As previously reported, a gunman identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas entered 345 Park Avenue, home to the NFL’s headquarters, at around 6:30PM on Monday.
He immediately opened fire in the lobby, killing NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working off-duty security while in uniform.
Tamura then shot several civilians before riding the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Islam, 36, was a husband, father of two, and was expecting a third child within weeks. He had been with the NYPD since December 2021, serving in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx.
"He was an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city," said Mayor Eric Adams. "And everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person," cited by CBS News.
"He embodies what this city is all about. He's a true-blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore but in his spirit and energy of loving this city," he added.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described Islam’s death as the ultimate sacrifice. “He put himself in harm’s way, he made the ultimate sacrifice - shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to the city,” she said, per the New York Post.
Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association, called Islam “a hardworking police officer proud to wear the NYPD shield.” He added: “Every day, he did whatever he had to do to provide for his family.”
President Donald Trump also spoke out about the late officer and the other victims of the tragedy in a Truth Social post shared on Tuesday.
“My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Trump wrote. “God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York.”
Three other civilians were also killed in the attack, and one individual, an NFL employee, was seriously injured and remains in stable condition.
Authorities recovered a firearm, ammunition, a phone, and a handwritten note at the scene. According to NBC News, the note referenced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease often found in athletes exposed to repeated head trauma.
Tamura reportedly believed he was suffering from CTE and blamed the NFL for his deteriorating mental health.
While the motive remains under investigation, law enforcement officials have not ruled out that the gunman may have intentionally targeted the NFL, whose offices are located on the fifth through eighth floors of the building.
