People are sharing Trump's 2016 tweet about Hillary Clinton 'losing with dignity' back to him

A number of social media users have taken to Twitter this week to share a tweet written by incumbent president Donald Trump in 2016 about Hilary Clinton "losing with dignity".

The POTUS and Republican Party presidential candidate has provoked major controversy following Election Night by appearing to prematurely announce himself as the winner of the 2020 US presidential elections and alleging "fraud against the American public."

No winner has been confirmed as of this writing, but a recent article from the Associated Press states that Joe Biden currently holds leads in Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Georgia - which, if secured, would put him in a strong position to capture the 270 Electoral College votes required to be declared the next President of the United States.

In response to Biden's surge, Trump addressed the US people from the White House on Thursday (November 5), in which he stated:

"If you count the legal vote, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us. If you count the votes that came in late, we're looking at them very strongly. A lot of votes came in late.

"I talked about mail-in voting for a long time. It's really destroyed our system. It's a corrupt system. And it's made us corrupt, even if we are not corrupt by nature. It's too easy. They wait and wait and you see that on election night."

And in a tweet shared with his 87.7 million Twitter followers, Trump also wrote: "We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election. We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed! [sic]"

In response to the President's recent unfounded comments, Twitter users have been resharing a four-year-old tweet written by Donald Trump himself that references Hillary Clinton and the Democrat's loss in the 2016 election.

The tweet in question reads: "Vladimir Putin said today about Hillary and Dems: 'In my opinion, it is humiliating. One must be able to lose with dignity.' So true! [sic]"

As a result of the contrast between Trump's statements and behavior during the ongoing ballot count, a number of Twitter users have shared the tweet as an example of what they believe to be Trump's perceived hypocrisy:

In addition, over the last week, the late Senator John McCain's concession speech from the 2008 presidential election has also gone viral on social media.

In the video in question, the then-72-year-old Republican candidate congratulated his rival Barack Obama, on his victory in the polls, and a number of people have since highlighted the contrast in McCain's speech compared to President Trump's recent post-election press conferences.

Delivered back on November 4, 2008, it was re-posted to Twitter by NowThis this week, where it has received over 15 million views as of the time of writing.

Addressing his supporters at the end of his campaign, McCain stated:

"We have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly. A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love.

"[Obama] managed to [win] by inspiring the hopes of so many millions of Americans who once wrongly believed that they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president.

"Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans, and please believe me when I say that no association has ever meant more to me than that."

As the ballot count narrows further and further, Democrat candidate Joe Biden has urged his supporters to "keep the faith" and has denied any wrongdoing.

The Press Association added that the final vote counts in several states could be being delayed by several factors, including the high turnout for the election, a huge number of mail-in ballots, and the slim margins between Trump and Biden.
