Mitt Romney compares Donald Trump's return to rallies to WWE: 'It's entertaining but it's not real'
Mitt Romney has compared Donald Trump's return to political rallies to WWE.
The Republican Utah senator said on Sunday, June 27, that Trump's ongoing claim of being robbed of the 2020 election is "like WWE" because "it's entertaining, but it's not real".
When asked if more Republicans should call out the former president on State of the Union, Romney said: "I do think it's important for each person to speak the truth and to make clear that the 'Big Lie' is exactly that."
The Utah senator explained that Tump's assistance that electoral fraud took place could have a damaging effect on democracy be used by autocratic nations against democratic ones.
However, despite this, he said that in the US, at least, increasing numbers of people are viewing Trump's behavior as being "a bit like WWF" - a reference to the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which was formerly known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
"It's entertaining, but it's not real," he said. "And I know people want to say, yeah, they believe in the 'Big Lie' in some cases, but I think people recognize that it's a lot of show and bombast. But it's going nowhere."
Romney pointed out that no credible sources have ever validated Trump's claims of electoral fraud, which he has been making prior to election night and after.
"Did he hear it from the Justice Department? No. Did he hear it from the intelligence community? No. So where did he hear it from? The MyPillow guy? Rudy Giuliani? What are their sources of information?" he asked.
"It's pretty clear the election was fair, it wasn't the outcome the president wanted, but let's move on."
Romney, who is a well-known Trump critic, was the only Republican to vote against the then-president during his first impeachment trial.
Then, when Trump was put on trial for impeachment again on the grounds of inciting the January 6 assault on the Capitol building, he was one of seven Republicans to vote against Trump.
