'Fugitive' parents of Michigan school shooting suspect arrested after police manhunt

The parents of the 15-year-old Michigan school shooting suspect have been arrested following a manhunt and a tip to the police.

Yesterday, it was announced that James and Jennifer Crumbley - the father and mother of Oxford High School student Ethan Crumbley - would each be charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter after their son was alleged to have fatally shot four of his fellow students on Tuesday afternoon. Seven other students were injured in the shooting.

However, after Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald told reporters on Friday that James and Jennifer Crumbley were set to face manslaughter charges, the pair missed their arraignment that was scheduled later that day.

CNN reports that law enforcement considered the couple "fugitives", as a manhunt took place to locate the parents.

Following a police tip, Detroit Police spokesperson Rudy Harper revealed that James and Jennifer Crumbley were found on the first floor of an industrial building. Officials had found their car nearby prior to their discovery.

Detroit Police Chief James White said that the couple appeared to be "hiding" in the building and that there was no evidence to suggest that they intended on being found by police.

Officials also informed CNN that the couple withdrew $4,000 from an ATM on Friday.

The couple was arrested in Detroit on manslaughter charges. The Detroit Police Department was assisted by the US Marshals Service in the search for the couple, with a reward of up to $10,000 offered for anyone with information that could lead to their arrest.

DPD was able to make the arrests after a local business owner called 911 after seeing a woman standing near "the suspect vehicle" in his parking lot.

Attorney Shannon Smith, who is representing the couple, had previously told CNN that the Crumbleys had left town following concerns for their own safety, but had planned on handing themselves to the police voluntarily.

But White argues that their actions were not "indicative of turning themselves in."

Undersheriff Michael McCabe with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said in a statement: "After an extensive search by DPD including Detroit K-9 units both of the fugitives were located and arrested by DPD."

Their son, Ethan Crumbley, was charged as an adult with one count of terrorism, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said on Friday that the manslaughter charges against the couple have been made in order to "hold the individuals who contributed to this tragedy accountable - and also send a message."

McDonald told reporters: "Gun owners have a responsibility. When they fail to uphold that responsibility, there are serious and criminal consequences."
