Donald Trump has been caught on a hot mic complaining to Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu about not getting the recognition he deserves.
This is a familiar complaint for the US President, who has made no secret of his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize and to receive kudos for ending - as he claims - eight wars.
Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu met in Florida yesterday
Trump is clearly upset because four previous presidents - including Barack Obama - have won the Nobel Peace Prize, while he remains without the honor, despite claiming he has solved all sorts of global conflicts.
Whether that is totally true or not is up for debate.
Still, it didn’t stop Trump from remarking on it to his Israeli counterpart - who was among those who nominated him for the award - as they sat for dinner during a meeting on Monday.
The pair met at Trump’s Mar-a-Largo resort in Florida yesterday and it was clear that Trump wanted to make his feelings known at the table.
Trump has been captured on hot mics before - a few times, actually - and is no stranger to saying things he really thinks on the record anyway, but this one seemed particularly meaningful to him.
In another candid admission, Trump said: “35 years of fighting and they stopped.
“Do I get credit for it? No. They gave the Nob[el] … I did eight of them.
“India, how about India and Pakistan? And then, so, I did eight of them. And then I’ll tell you the rest of it [later].”
Trump was the butt of jokes after his admission
In case you are wondering, this year the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan peace activist María Corina Machado, but Trump was given an award of his own.
That award wasn’t from the Nobel jury, but from world soccer organization FIFA, who presented him with the FIFA Peace Award, seemingly trying to stroke his ego ahead of next year’s World Cup.
One person cracked a joke about that award: “Hey, the FIFA Peace Prize is a close second.”
Another asked: “Don’t you have to actually ACHIEVE peace somewhere first?”
Again, the actual truth of Trump’s peacemaking claims is up for debate.
A third simply wrote: “What a freaking baby. What an embarrassment.”
Still, Trump is adamant on brokering peace deals between Israel and Palestine, and between Russia and Ukraine, so we’ll have to wait and see whether he can actually get an award in the future.
