Online troll reportedly arrested after making death threats against Piers Morgan and son

Piers Morgan has spoken out after an online troll was reportedly arrested for making death threats against the presenter and his son.

As reported by The Sun, Morgan last night slammed people who think it's okay "to make death threats against public figures on social media."

According to The Sun, officers from two of the UK's largest police forces conducted a six-month investigation into the chilling comments and messages, which also targeted Piers' eldest son, Spencer.

One of the messages labeled Morgan as a "marked man", and stated that no security would be able to protect him.

"Your [sic] a marked man," the troll wrote. "Calling the police, big tech or beefing up your security isn’t going to stop us getting to you, this isn’t a threat piers, it’s a promise. Your [sic] getting killed."

The troll added that 28-year-old Spencer would "get it" if his dad didn't, and even went as far as to extend the threat to Spencer's mom.

On Thursday, 56-year-old Morgan told reporters: "People think it’s perfectly OK to make death threats to public figures on social media but it’s not — there has to be a line drawn, especially when family members are targeted.

"That’s why I reported it and I am grateful to the Met Police and Greater Manchester Police for taking it so seriously."

He added that: "A jail term could act as a deterrent to others."

The Sun adds that, upon recommendation by the police, Morgan installed a panic button by his bed.

Earlier today, Morgan shared the front page of The Sun's newspaper - with the headline "Piers troll arrested over death threats" - along with the message: "Cowardly threats have consequences."

The arrest reportedly occurred on August 3 - one year after the troll's first threatening message to Piers. Police also seized the troll's phone and tablets for forensic analysis.

It is believed that the unnamed man has been released on bail.

Back in February of 2021, Morgan penned a message to "the internet troll who threatened to kill [him]" in the Daily Mail. "I will find you," Morgan wrote.

"I still love Twitter, both as an unparalleled journalistic resource and as an entertaining way to interact with people," Morgan added. "But even my rhino-thick skin gets occasionally pierced by the shudderingly vile abuse that contaminates so much of it these days."
