Theo Von responds to suicide concerns after he spoke about 'taking his own life'
Theo Von is speaking out after sparking concern with a comment about suicide during his recent Netflix special taping.
The comedian, best known for his quick wit and popular podcast This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, reassured fans that while he had an admittedly bad night onstage, he is in no way suicidal.
That's a relief, at least.
What happened at the Beacon Theatre
Von recorded his special at the Beacon Theatre in New York City last month, but by his own admission, the show did not go as planned.
According to several audience members, the performance fell flat, with some saying large portions of the crowd left before it was over.
Rather than ignore the situation, Von addressed the issue directly with the fans who stayed, apologizing for how the night had gone.
In doing so, he made a dark joke that raised eyebrows: “I’m having a long month, I’m trying not to take my own life.”
The remark immediately made its way to social media, with clips circulating alongside concern from fans who worried that the comedian might be in a bad place.
Von: “I would never take my own life”
On Thursday’s episode of his podcast, Von set the record straight, stating: "I would never take my own life okay, you hear that, Israel?"
He continued: "I'm grateful to God for his grace in my life.
"I love my siblings. I have so many friends and people that love me and people that I wanna see their children grow up.
"I'm hopeful that I get to have a wife and meet my own children one day.
"There's a ton of things in my life that keep me alive and hopeful, right.
"I wanna be able to have an impact in the world. Those are just a few of them, probably.
His reference to Israel comes off the back of an episode of his podcast where he stated that the "genocide in Gaza" is "one of the sickest things that's ever happened."
Fans flood the comments section
Many of Von’s fans have since rallied behind him, flooding the comments section on X in his defense.
"Crazy that in 2025 you have to make public disclaimers letting people know if something happens to you that it was Israel," one person tweeted.
Someone else added: "Did people hear he was trying not to take his own life, and actually thought he was suicidal? Oh, you sweet summer children..."
A third user chimed in with: "You already are having an impact on the world [...] we love you and I am so glad to hear you are in a good place," while someone else said: "Oh Theo… if only you knew the impact you have in this world already."
Other users were not so convinced, with one person saying: "How important does he think he is? This is terminal main character syndrome."
Another comment read: "Latest craze: B-list influencers thinking they are important enough to off."
