Brad Pitt's estranged son Maddox has made major change to name
Another chapter has unfolded in the ongoing story surrounding Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s family.
Their eldest son, Maddox, 24, has officially dropped Pitt from his last name, eight months after his sister Shiloh made the same decision. The change came to light after his name appeared in the end credits of his mother’s new film as Maddox Jolie rather than Maddox Jolie-Pitt.
The credit was spotted following the release of Couture, which debuted in French cinemas earlier this week. Maddox worked on the drama as an assistant director, marking another step in his growing involvement behind the camera.
His new film credit reveals the change
According to People, the shift was evident not only in the on-screen credits but also in official materials tied to the project.
As reported, "production notes for the film provided to journalists showed Maddox’s name was also listed as Maddox Jolie" when the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.
Previously, Maddox was credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt when he worked as a production assistant on his mother’s biopic Maria, about opera legend Maria Callas.
In addition to Maddox, Jolie and Pitt share Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 19, and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
Shiloh legally dropped Pitt last year
Maddox’s move follows a similar step taken by Shiloh in 2025. Born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, she legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie shortly after turning 18.
At the time, her attorney Peter Levine told People that she "made an independent and significant decision following painful events," adding that she was "merely following legal process" when publishing notice of the change.
He also clarified: "Shiloh Jolie did not take out an 'ad' announcing any name change, and any press reporting that is inaccurate."
"As Shiloh's attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as is required."
The reported distance between Pitt and some of his children has been noted before. One source previously told People: "He has virtually no contact with the adult kids. His engagement with the younger kids is more limited in recent months because of his filming schedule."
In May 2024, Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie on the playbill for The Outsiders Broadway musical. A year earlier, Zahara, then a student at Spelman College, introduced herself without using Pitt’s last name during a sorority event.
"My name is Zahara Marley Jolie. And [I] landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California," she said in a clip shared by Essence.
Pitt speaks out as divorce battle ends
Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce settlement in December 2024, ending an eight-year legal battle. The split was highly contentious, and the former couple have also remained locked in a dispute over their French vineyard and estate after Jolie sold her reported $64 million stake to Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler in 2021.
In June, Pitt spoke to Entertainment Tonight at the F1 premiere in Mexico City about life lessons and family.
"No matter the mistake, you just learn from [it] and move on," he said. "It’ll lead to the next success."
He continued: "When you get to my age, you realize how important it is to surround yourself with the people you love, the people that love you back."
"Friends, family, and that’s it,” he added. "From there, we get to go make things. It’s a pretty simple, I think, equation."
