The now-viral moment, captured in a TikTok video that’s racked up over 2.5 million views, features Alyssa Fowler standing on the dance floor at her friend’s wedding in Jacksonville, Florida, when her partner, Josh Stepherson, suddenly dropped to one knee.

The bride, standing directly behind the couple, gasped in real-time as she realized what was happening.

Caught off guard but smiling, Fowler quickly turned to her friend to check: had Stepherson asked permission?

“No, he didn’t, but it’s okay! Say yes!” the bride responded enthusiastically.

Fowler said yes, sealing the spontaneous proposal with a hug as the bride and groom cheered and embraced the newly engaged couple.

To join the TikTok trend — “a moment that felt like Hozier’s yell” — where people share life milestones set to Noah Kahan’s “Northern Attitude (with Hozier),” Fowler shared the emotional video online.

But the clip didn’t just generate applause — it sparked a social media firestorm about wedding etiquette and whether proposing at someone else’s wedding is ever okay.

One reaction video labeled the move as “f**ked up” and “disrespectful.”

Others piled on, claiming that proposing during another couple’s big day steals attention and leeches off someone else’s carefully curated moment.

“He didn’t plan it, he didn’t spend money on it. Just lazy,” one commenter wrote.

Another took it a step further, saying, “Your boyfriend is so uncreative he couldn’t find a unique way to do that for you? This feels so hillbilly trailer parkish.”

Some sympathized with Fowler, suggesting she deserved better: “His girlfriend deserved her own special moment,” one wrote, calling the proposal an “ick.”

Still, not everyone was upset. Some users came to the couple’s defense.

“Always try having an open opinion, these two must be close friends … Nothing wrong with that,” one supporter said.

Another added: “Why does everyone think getting married is about being the centre of attention for the day? Marriages are about bringing people together and love. Love makes the world go round, folks.”

Fowler later told People that the proposal wasn’t premeditated.

Her boyfriend, Stepherson — who she’s been dating since 2021 — had intended to propose the night before but never got the chance. The ring had been in his wallet all along.

Then, during the reception, fate threw him the bouquet — literally. After catching it during the bouquet toss, he seized the moment.

“We acknowledge that it would have been more appropriate for Josh to have asked beforehand, but it was an in-the-moment decision. They were both very happy for us,” Fowler explained.

“All guests that I have spoken to since have said the timing couldn’t have been better, and everything played out perfectly,” she added.
