Employee told to work on Thanksgiving quits job after heated text exchange with boss
An employee has taken to social media to reveal how they quit their job over text after being asked to come into work over Thanksgiving - despite their boss approving the vacation time.
The worker shared the heated text exchange with their boss on Reddit, where other social media users couldn't quite believe the lack of respect being shown to the former employee.
Sharing screenshots of the exchange to the discussion website under the username 'binthinkin77', the ex-employee captioned the post: "Finally decided I’d had enough of my P.O.S. boss on Monday, & damn did it feel good."
The start of the thread starts by their boss - named Mike - messaging the Redditor to say: "Hello, Sophie has just quit and we are already short-staffed.
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like I’ll need you to come in on Thanksgiving."
In response, the ex-employee stated firmly but calmly: "Unfortunately I will be out of two visiting family, as I told you in October. You approved it, and I am unable to change my plans, I'm sorry."
Clearly irked by this very reasonable reply, the boss responded saying: "I don't appreciate the tone. We had enough staff in October and what I said no longer applied. Again, I apologize but I'll need you here for Thanksgiving."
And not appreciating their boss going back on their word, the employee firmly replied: "That won’t be happening. Speak to me like that again and you’ll be really short-staffed."
"You're about to get yourself into some big trouble," the boss replied. "Cooperate or you may find yourself here on Christmas as well. Got it?"
This threat was clearly enough for the Redditor, who replied: "Yeah I'm not sure how I put up with your s**t for almost a year. I quit. Good luck finding someone though!"
The Reddit post has since received over 90,000 'upvotes' and more than 7,800 comments from fellow users.
One person commented: "Shows how much they [employers] believe we need them. This is why health insurance is tied to employment in America. They want control."
A second backed up the ex-employee, writing: "I thought the tone was fairly respectful considering they wanted you to come in on a previously agreed upon off day."
Sharing another story about the same boss, 'binthinking77' said: "What’s ironic is he has the worst 'tone' speaking to his employees out of any boss I’ve ever had. One time he literally emailed everyone that he was taking a week vacation during our busiest time of year the day before he left, because he 'needed a break from all of us'. It’s insane looking back now."
And responding to those commenters who believes the story was fake, the original poster replied: "It is 100% real. I know it’s easy for tons of internet skeptics to come on here and tell me my story is fake but I’m literally living this, and I have any and all the evidence that this is real."
Thank goodness this employee is now a former employee! Remember, your boss doesn't own you!
