It's fair to say that Conor McGregor's knockout at the hands of Dustin Poirier came as a huge shock to fans of fighting and martial arts.
On January 24, at UFC 257 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, Poirier avenged his loss of six years ago by knocking McGregor out with a flurry of punches in round two of the bout, stunning the 2,000 fans in attendance at the Etihad Arena.
Now a video has gone viral on social media, showing McGregor's surprisingly humble interaction with Dustin Poirier after his loss.
Per news.com.au, the footage in question shows the 32-year-old Irish fighter dressed in a suit and tie following his first-ever KO loss in the UFC, shaking Poirier's hand warmly and congratulating him on his win.
In the short backstage clip, which you can view below, McGregor can be heard stating:
Take a look at the footage of Conor post-match in the video below:"We’ll do it again. I’m very happy for you. You’re a f***ing warrior. You’ve got passion, courage, everything it takes.
"It takes a lot of courage to get in against a man, you know, after the first fight. I’m honored to share the Octagon, and we will do it again. Thank you so much."
Per MMA Mania, McGregor made no excuses for his dramatic loss in the ring, stating in a later press conference: "I’ll regroup and pick myself up off the floor and go again and that’s it.
"Styles make fights, there are many great stylistic matchups out there. Me and Dustin are 1-1, myself and Nate are 1-1. There are many good matchups for me and I’ll adopt a different approach for a trilogy with Dustin because those leg kicks are not to be messed with.
"That calf kick. I’ve never experienced that, and it’s a good one. It’s not that I don’t have the style in me to switch it up and keep that at bay. I’ve a lot more weapons I didn’t get to show. It wasn’t my night. Wasn’t a great night."
This video exposes the damage Poirier's leg kicks did to McGregor:Meanwhile, Poirier himself stated: "It was a lot of things, but it wasn't payback. That wasn't the driving force.
"The first time I was a deer in the headlights. This time he was just another fighter that bleeds just like me. The goal was to be technical, pick my shots and not brawl at all.
"Then I had him hurt so I went a little crazy."
In a later tweet made to his 8.5 million followers on Twitter, McGregor wrote: "Thanks for the support everyone! Was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on.
"I’m excited at the blockbuster trilogy I now have on my hands. Dustin is a hell of a competitor and I look forward to going again. God bless us all, happy Sunday."
