Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has been flooded with messages of support after he revealed his autism diagnosis.
The actor, 49, called the diagnosis a "shock," but "not a surprise," as he had previously speculated that he might have autism.
Taking to Instagram earlier this week, Miller opened up about his diagnosis, telling fans he was told he has autism a year ago.
"This fall marks 1 year since I received my informal autism diagnosis," he wrote.
"Preceded by a self-diagnosis. Followed by a formal diagnosis. It was a long, flawed process in need of updating. IMO. I’m a middle-aged man. Not a 5-year-old."
Wentworth emphasized that he simply wants to share his news, not become a "loud, ill-informed voice" in the autism community, per E! News.
He went on: "I don’t know enough about autism. (There’s a lot to know.) Right now my work looks like evolving my understanding. Re-examining 5 decades of lived experience thru a new lens…
"The #autistic community (this I do know) has historically been talked over. Spoken for. I don’t wish to do additional harm. Only to raise my hand, say, 'I am here. Have been (w/o realizing it).'"
He also pointed people toward "numerous individuals sharing thoughtful and inspiring content on Instagram, TikTok... Unpacking terminology. Adding nuance. Fighting stigma..."

The star added: "Oh - this isn't something I'd change. No. I get - got - immediately being autistic is central to who I am. To everything I've achieved/articulated.
"Oh - I also want to say to the many (many) people who consciously or unconsciously gave me that extra bit of grace + space over the years, allowed me to move thru the world in a way that made sense to me whether or not it made sense to them… thank you.
"And to those who made a different choice… well. People will reveal themselves..."
Needless to say, his post saw fans rush to social media to share messages of support and praise for opening up to his followers.
"I'm so proud of you, @wentworthmiller . Thank you for sharing this part of you with us. I love you with all my heart," one fan wrote on Twitter.
Another added: "@wentworthmiller I’m so proud of who you are, remember that you are loved and supported by all of us. I love you unconditionally."
While a third wrote: "Stoked to hear @wentworthmiller has revealed he is autistic & did so with awareness of the autistic community, an open mind, a desire to learn & a promise not to speak until he feels confident in his knowledge of autism. I’m proud this great person is part of our community."
Another added: "Wow that’s a great statement he posted, as good as it could be really. To give credit to other people on social media and put his hand up, and not want to take the spotlight. I’m very impressed and somewhat proud (?) of him."
It's not the first time Miller has been candidly open with fans about his personal life.
Back in 2013, he came out as gay and revealed he would not be playing straight characters on TV anymore, which included his role as Michael Scofield on Prison Break.
At the time he wrote he wouldn't be returning to the show "not (because) of static on social media (although that has centered the issue)," but because "I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told)."
He added: "I'm sorry. If you're hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one…That's your work."
Prison Break aired on FOX from 2005 to 2009 and briefly returned to the network in 2017 for a fifth season.
