People are urging 'revolting' new Amy Winehouse biopic to 'cease production immediately'

Fans have slammed the forthcoming Amy Winehouse biopic after pictures and videos on set have emerged online.

The 'Valerie' musician died in 2011 at the age of 27, with her cause of death being determined as alcohol poisoning.

Fast forward 12 years later, a new biopic titled Back To Black is currently being filmed in London, England, and stars actress Marisa Abela as the late singer, and Jack O'Connell as Winehouse's ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

The movie will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson - best known for Fifty Shades Of Grey and the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy - and she described it as a "passion project" for her "close friend," per Variety.

Filming of the movie began on Monday (January 16) and recent images on set have been released, giving viewers online a glimpse at the biopic.

In one picture, fans can see the 26-year-old actress transformed into the 'Rehab' songstress and crying hysterically while then-husband Fielder-Civil (played by O'Connell) - who Winehouse divorced two years before her death - is being arrested by the police.

According to Buzzfeed, Winehouse's 40-year-old former partner was reportedly arrested in front of her in 2007 for his part in attacking a bar owner and then attempting to cover up the crime with a bribe.

Also, The Mirror reported at the time that the incident happened in her apartment, but, there seems to be no outburst in front of paparazzi and onlookers, nor an incident where she was held back by a police officer.

The early shots of the film have aggravated many fans of the Grammy-winning singer on social media, with some even remarking how they'd like to see the biopic boycotted.

One user wrote: "Need the Amy Winehouse biopic to cease production IMMEDIATELY."

Another said: "Absolutely no one asked for this, profiting off of dead artists is so wack, this is the equivalent of keeping deceased artists’ accounts active and frequently posting on them, weirdo behavior."

A third commented: "The media and those around her exploited her in life and now even when she’s dead they continue to exploit her. Absolutely disgusting."

A fourth shared: "Can we all agree to completely ignore this movie when it comes out."

While many supporters of the beloved singer are enraged by the latest portrayal of her life, the film has received backing from her father, Mitch Winehouse.

As Esquire noted, the 72-year-old owns half of his daughter's estate and seems to be fine with what is being depicted on screen as he recently shared a picture of his own character  - played by Eddy Marsan - on his Instagram account.

He has also previously spoken out against other attempts to tell the 'Back to Black' hitmaker's story and was angered by Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy.

After being painted negatively in the documentary, Mitch declared that he was going to put his side of the story forward, and did so in the 2021 documentary Reclaiming Amy and is now lending his support for the new biopic.

According to a press release obtained by NME, the upcoming film will feature the musician's iconic songs and will focus on her "extraordinary genius, creativity, and honesty that infused everything she did".

"A journey that took her from the craziness and color of 90s Camden High Street to global adoration - and back again, Back To Black crashes through the looking glass of celebrity to watch this journey from behind the mirror, to see what Amy saw, to feel what she felt," they added.
