Meanwhile, Peter Friedlander, the Vice President of Netflix's original content, stated:

"We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for.

"From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy."

The Assassin's Creed games began life as a spin-off of Ubisoft's already-popular Prince of Persia franchise, with similar parkour and acrobatic mechanics married to a vast-open world environment.

The games tell the story of a complex conspiracy stretching back through history, between the Assassins and the Templars, taking place during the crusades, the American Revolution, renaissance Italy, Victorian England, Ancient Egypt, and many other time periods.

A movie starring Michael Fassbender, and directed by Justin Kurzel, was released to mixed reviews back in 2016.
