Ellen DeGeneres deletes 'meaningless' Black Lives Matter tweet after facing backlash

Ellen DeGeneres has deleted a "meaningless" Black Lives Matter tweet after facing backlash on the social media platform.

This comes as protests continue to unfold across the US, calling out the systemic injustices carried out against black people, not least seen by the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor.

According to them, in the now-deleted tweet, the talk show host wrote: "Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad. People of color in this country have faced injustice for far too long. For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and with love."

However, this tweet did not go down well on Twitter, and the 62-year-old was slammed for her response to the crisis.

One Twitter user sarcastically wrote in response: "For things to change, things must change. Brave."

DeGeneres was slammed, in particular, for making such a vague statement and for failing to mention people of color, who have typically been the victims of police brutality.

A second Twitter user wrote: "As an Asian-American, a POC, I still have more privilege than Black women and men. This statement is meaningless and a back door to All Lives Matter. For things to change, we must first acknowledge specifically that Black Lives Matter."

A third responded: "1) it's black people 2) it's not love if you just mean 'sweetly imploring oppressed people to stop damaging property' 3) donate more money. you're mates with war criminals [sic]."

Whereas a fourth simply wrote: "Say black people Ellen."
