It all began when the British actor, who played Chuck Bass in all five seasons, posted a photo of the phrase "XOXO" on the social media website, teasing fans that something relating to the hit show would be arriving at 1pm BST on Monday (15 June).

This caused fans to assume that he'd be dropping information about the reboot after it was announced in 2019, per the Independent.

Westwick captioned the "XOXO" picture: "Got a little something for you...Tomorrow 1pm.. Hint....xoxo."

However, when fans discovered that he was simply promoting Gossip Girl themed facemasks, they were disappointed, to say the least, even though Westwick revealed in a subsequent Twitter post that they were raising money for a good cause.

Whereas a fifth simply found the whole thing funny, writing: "Ed Westwick made an announcement yesterday that he has a surprise for fans at 1pm & he signed it off with "XOXO". Rumours went wild of GG making a comeback. Then when the surprise was unveiled, it turned out to be a product launch, of masks with "XOXO" written on them. Too funny!"

The reboot is set eight years after the original series and is scheduled to drop on HBO Max in 2021.

The new series will take place in the age of social media and follow a group of private school students as they come under the Gossip Girl radar.
