What Jennifer Lopez said in Spanish during Biden's inauguration - and why it was so important

After showing off her ultra-impressive pipes during her performance at Joe Biden's inauguration yesterday (January 20), Jennifer Lopez decided to address the nation in Spanish.

The 51-year-old hitmaker belted out a heartwarming patriotic medley, which included Woody Guthrie's 'This Land is Your Land' and 'America the Beautiful'.

Towards the end of her performance, J-Lo, who is of Puerto Rican parentage, started to speak in Spanish.

"Una nación bajo Dios, indivisible, con libertad y justicia para todos," Lopez said.

Relive Jennifer Lopez's inauguration performance including the moment she addressed the nation in Spanish:

Lopex was actually delivering part of the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish, which translated to: "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Needless to say, this would have been an emotional moment for tens of millions of native Spanish speakers in the US, of which, per the BBC, there are around 41 million.

People with Latin American roots make up a significant proportion of the US population. At around 18% of the population, the diverse community forms the largest minority group in the country.

And yet, many Americans with Latin heritage have consistently felt marginalized and "othered".

Watch President Biden deliver his Inaugural Address:

A number of Spanish-speakers in the US have since taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the powerful moment which saw Lopez deliver a line from the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.

One Twitter user said: "Can we all talk about how @JLo normalized speaking Spanish on a presidential inauguration! Our community was seen, represented, heard and loud today!"

Another said: "As a Puerto Rican American, I’m in tears seeing Jennifer Lopez just kill this inauguration performance. Holy s**t."

A third said: "May I comment on how triumphant it was to hear Jennifer Lopez speak Spanish on the inauguration stage today. After four years of an Administration who devalued and demonized Spanish immigrants, it was inspirational."

A different person gushed: "Okay, but Jennifer Lopez speaking Spanish in the #Inauguration brought tears to my eyes and filled my heart with happiness. Que bello."

And there were plenty of other tweets celebrating the moment:

A truly wonderful performance for a truly wonderful day!
