The Weeknd spent $7 million of his own money to make Super Bowl performance what he 'envisioned'

The Weeknd spent $7 million of his own money to make his performance at yesterday's Super Bowl what he "envisioned".

The 12-minute-long performance saw the 30-year-old singer perform some of his greatest hits including 'Star Boy', 'The Hills', 'Earned It', and 'Blinding Lights' to a crowd of vaccinated healthcare workers at Florida's Raymond James Stadium.

The singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, explained that he spent a whopping $7 of his own money "to make this halftime show be what he envisioned."

In an interview with Billboard, he said: "We've been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl."

Abel certainly delivered on his promise, and at one point during the show, The Weeknd grabbed a handheld camera to perform 'Can't Feel My Face' inside a hall of mirrors.

No expense was spared in setting the stage for The Weeknd's performance, and he arrived in a floating black convertible that was surrounded by neon signs.

The majority of the performance took place in front of a backdrop of a set modeled on the city in Fritz Lang's Metropolis, which had its own towering buildings and bright lights.

The Weeknd's performance was widely praised online, both by fans and other musicians.

"Stunning visually and his hair is perfectly on perfect #Theweekend," wrote Estelle.

Tyga tweeted: "1 of the best super bowl performances I've seen."

The Weeknd at one point descended down into the field and was surrounded by dangers who were sporting the now-iconic bandaged look that he has channeled since After Hours was released.

Abel explained to entertainment tonight that the 2021 halftime show would not be taking place in the middle of the field as it has previously done.

"Due to the COVID and the safety of the players and the workers, we kind of built the stage within the stadium," the singer said, adding that he ‘"wanted to kind of do something that hasn't been done before."

However, while The Weeknd might have gone into his own pocket to make his performance exactly what he envisioned, it was not the only notable musical moment of the evening, as Miley Cyrus broke down in tears while performing her hit song 'Wrecking Ball'.
