Saginaw Grant has passed away at the age of 85.
As reported by The Independent, the news of Grant's death was announced by the star's publicist, Lani Carmichael. In a post written on the actor's Facebook page, Carmichael said:
"It's with heavy hearts we announce a warrior has been called home. Saginaw Morgan Grant, the hereditary chief and medicine man of the Sac & Fox tribe, traveled the world speaking of his traditions, his experiences, his sobriety and his faith as both a Native American and a Christian."
The post details that Grant passed away on July 28, with Movieweb reporting that Grant died of natural causes.
Grant was born on July 20, 1936, was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma.
After landing an acting role in the 1988 movie War Party, Grant went on to star in popular 90s shows such as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and Baywatch.
Roles in shows like My Name Is Earl, American Horror Story, and Shameless, followed, but Grant will perhaps best be known for his appearance in Breaking Bad's season five episode 'Ozymandias'.
On the big screen, audiences will remember Grant for his performance as Chief Big Bear alongside Johnny Depp in the 2013 remake of The Lone Ranger.
Grant also won a Native American Music Award for Record of the Year for his 2018 album Don't Let the Drums Go Silent.
A beloved motivational speaker, Deadline also details how Grant was an influential member of the San Diego International Film Festival’s American Indian Advisory Board.
Speaking to Native News Online about the ongoing pandemic, Grant urged others to:
"Take a moment to find the beauty in a negative situation...spend extra time with someone and let them know they're loved. Recognize the opportunities you have in every situation, know that your choices in a crisis define who you are, let this define you in a positive light."
The Facebook post details that the star "is survived by his daughter Lisa Grant, daughter-In-law Dodie L Kent, grandchildren Cassandra and Vanessa Kent and Della Grant, and great-grandchildren Joseph Soutter, Sherry Jo Soutter, Stephen Soutter, and Micah Little Crow, his brothers Austin JR and Francis SR, Publicist Lani Melisa Carmichael, his adopted son Rick Mora, a soon to be grandson Chayton Mora, adopted daughter Heather Everette, and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Oklahoma."
