Demi Lovato says their 'masculine and feminine energy are equal' as singer opens up about being non-binary

Demi Lovato has opened up about their non-binary status after coming out in May.

In an interview with TODAY, the former Disney star spoke candidly about having both masculine and feminine energy.

"The way that I explain being nonbinary to people, or gender non conforming, is for me personally — I can’t speak to everyone in their experience — when I came to the realization that I am equally as masculine as I am feminine," the 29-year-old said.

"My masculine and feminine energy are equal, so much so that I may be wearing a dress and heels right now, but I don’t identify as just a woman, or just a man, and I identify as both."

Speaking about their choice to come out as non-binary, Lovato continued: "I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering."

Lovato also said that they understand that people can slip up sometimes. "I do have a lot of grace [with it]," Lovato said, joking: "I still mess up sometimes and say, 'Oh, I can’t wait to be an aunt one day,' and I’m like, 'Wait, what word do I use?' I think for that one we’re going to use ‘aunkle."

Speaking about being pansexual, they added: "I’m attracted to human beings, and it doesn’t matter what you identify as. I don’t hold myself back from sharing my love with anybody."

The Cool For The Summer singer came out as non-binary on Instagram in May of this year, telling their followers: "I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward."

This comes after Lovato said alien angels are protecting them from their "own worst enemy".

The former Disney Star's upcoming Peacock show, Unidentified with Demi Lovato, sees Lovato, their sister, Dallas, and their sceptical friend, Matthew Montogomery, go on the hunt for alien life.

Over the course of four episodes, the trio tries to find out more about possible extraterrestrial life through investigating alleged eyewitnesses, looking into top-secret government records, and even meeting individuals who claim to have been abducted by UFOs.

Speaking about the experience, and the impact it's had on them, Lovato told Entertainment Tonight's Matt Cohen: "I feel like we're all our own worst enemy, or at least I am, so I definitely could see how if anything is up there watching over me, they're trying to protect me from my worst enemy, which is myself."

"I feel like it’s so important also to talk about this because it raises our consciousness," the singer added. "It expands our consciousness and that is what we have to do in order to make this world a better place."
