Alec Baldwin sued for $25 million in defamation lawsuit by family of Marine killed in Afghanistan

Alec Baldwin is in hot water again.

The 63-year-old actor is facing another lawsuit, this time from the family of a Marine killed in Afghanistan, who are suing him for defamation in the amount of $25 million.

According to them, Baldwin falsely accused members of the family of being present at the January 6 riot last year. They are now demanding a jury trial, People reports.

Court documents claim Baldwin first got in touch with the McCollum family after US Marine Rylee McCollum was killed outside of Afghanistan's international airport in an August 26 bombing.

Twenty-year-old Rylee was one of the military troops processing evacuees to be flown out of Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover.

When he heard about Rylee's death, Baldwin reached out to one of his sisters - 22-year-old Roice - on Instagram. Court documents imply that at this point he wanted to help the family, as he sent $5,000 to go towards Rylee's widow and their baby.

However, things allegedly turned nasty earlier this month, when Baldwin accused Roice of storming the Capitol complex during the January 6 riot.

He reportedly called her an "insurrectionist" and "Jan. 6 rioter" in a private Instagram message, as well as reposting an earlier picture she had shared of the demonstration.

"I reposted your photo. Good luck," Baldwin allegedly threatened her.

The picture he refers to was posted to Instagram by Roice on January 1 and shows her at the Capital. In the suit, she admits to attending a protest on January 6 - but insists that she did not participate in the riots that followed.

According to the court documents, her version of events has been cleared by the FBI.

Baldwin has since deleted his repost of the photo. However, Roice, her sister Cheyenne and her sister-in-law Jiennah Crayton all claim to have received death threats and "hostile, aggressive, hateful" messages as a result of Baldwin's accusations, adding that they all suffered "severe emotional distress".

According to the three women, Baldwin's comments are "false, outrageous, defamatory, irresponsible, vindictive".

The Beetlejuice actor is currently embroiled in another high-profile lawsuit over the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Baldwin discharged a loaded prop pistol while filming the movie Rust, killing the cinematographer and wounding another crew member. He maintains that the incident was entirely accidental and that he had no idea the gun was loaded.

Two other members of the film's crew are suing Baldwin, as well as Rust's producers.
