This rare species of chicken is completely black from its feathers to its bones

The majority of people who grew up in the early noughties had a goth phase. Whether yours went as far as dramatically walking along a boulevard listening to Greenday (guilty) or if you simply dyed your hair black, donned some eyeliner, and showed up at high school looking like a moody force to be reckoned with.

Now, don't get me wrong, goth is a serious subculture for a lot of people, but for the majority, it's just a phase and one that former goths (or emos...) don't look back fondly upon.

But when it comes to emulating the night and all things darkness, it turns out that there is one animal that has even the most hardcore Sisters of Mercy fan beaten: the goth chicken.

Yes, you read that right, goth chickens are a thing and they're as awesome (and spooky) as you might think.

Watch this incredible animal do its thing in the video below:

This rare animal is what's known as the Ayam Cemani, per Bored Panda. Originating from Indonesia, it is black from head to toe and that's why it's so fascinating.

The goth chicken has what's known as fibromelanosis, a harmless genetic mutation that causes excess melanin to make its way into the bird's tissue - including its organs and bones.

The Cemani chickens have been fascinating people for a long time, so much so that way back in the 12th century, they were actually the chickens of the elite that inspired Javanese folklore.

This is because their charcoal-colored blood (yup, even their blood is black) was believed to be a delicacy of the spirits that could be used to summon power and wealth.

According to Nautilus.com, Veronika Kusumaryati, a Ph.D. student studying anthropology at Harvard, said: "The blackness of the Cemani makes it a preferred go-between, an emissary between the human and the supernatural world."

But if you want a goth chicken yourself, then you're pretty much out of luck because they are so rare, with Nautilus reporting that there is just one breeder in the US who sells them for thousands of dollars.

But hey! You can always get a raven to come tapping on your chamber door...
